Universities in Japan offer various degree courses taught in English for international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
With Japanese students, international students will be studying in a diverse environment.

Types of university
Universities are categorised into three sectors.
- National Universities are funded by the Japanese Government. For instance, the University of Tokyo and Hokkaido are in this sector.
- Public Universities are funded by regional authorities.
- Private Universities are funded by private investors. Keio and Waseda University are in this category.
Universities that offer courses in all English are mostly in the national and private sectors.
Japanese academic year
The Japanese academic year begins in April, but the start of term for international students varies depending on their chosen course and university. Some start in April, while others begin in September or October.
- Undergraduate course is 4 years.
- Postgraduate course is 2 years.
Requirements for applying to the university in Japan
Undergraduate
Students must have completed a 12-year education prior to university (primary school to high school)
Submission documents include
- high school graduation certificate
- exam certificates
- transcripts for all subjects studied at high school
Postgraduate
Students must have completed a 16-year education prior to university (primary school to undergraduate). For those in medicine, 18-year education will be required.
Required documents include
- undergraduate degree certificate
- transcripts of all the subjects studied at undergraduate level
- thesis/research reports that demonstrates your speciality
All university applicants
In addition to the requirements above,
- English proficiency test certificate
- Resume showing your educational history
- Recommendation letters
- Financial certificates of your financial sponsor
How universities will assess your application
International students will be assessed based on the documents they submit.
Only those who pass this stage will proceed to the online interview. Therefore, it is crucial that applicants have all the necessary documents ready and have completed the forms for submission.The specified documents must be submitted to the Admissions Office by the closing date. They will not accept any late submissions.
Some postgraduate courses require applicants to obtain approval from a university supervisor before they can apply. This involves an interview with the supervisor, where applicants discuss their research plans. Supervisors are often professors who specialise in the field.
