Learn Hiragana and Katakana, what are they?

There are three types of text which form Japanese words.  These are Hiragana and Katakana, the phonetic letterings and simplified Chinese character, Kanji.

Each word is made up of Hiragana on its own, or a mixture of Hiragana and Kanji.  Katakana is often used when converting English words into Japanese. From the audio table, you will notice that both Hiragana and Katakana are pronounced the same.

On your first day of the course

When you start the Japanese conversation course in Japan, you will see that the textbooks are all in Hiragana and Katakana.  Therefore, to be able to read them is the first step to learning Japanese.

On the first day of the course, the school will assess students’ Japanese level. This is to allocate each student to an appropriate class. Thus, knowing how to read them will most definitely help you start the course quickly.

Day 1

Using a Hiragana and Katakana 50 character table, revise Sei-on あ(a) to ん(n)column.  Learn some vocabularies using those characters.


Day 2

Revise Daku-on and Yo-on. Learn simple phrases using three forms.

Prior to the lesson, Hiragana and Katakana table will be sent to you. Then we can go through it together.

Hiragana writing exercise sheets are also sent to you by request.  You may even be able to learn Hiragana and Katakana writing during the lesson!
